Laying instruction
FUNDATION
The correct foundation is determined by the subsoil and expected load. Generally described, the foundation consists of: For footpaths: a flat layer of 10 cm of sharp sand. For vehicular traffic: a compacted layer of rubble of 15-20 cm plus 4-6 cm of sharp sand.
FORMS
Create the shapes with edging boards in aluminium, corten or galvanised steel, wood or PVC. Height (10-15 cm) and thickness depending on expected load. Use laser alignment with surroundings.
VERDICT
A stable, well-compacted foundation as required for any paving is essential. Poor foundations will lead to disappointing results.
FLAT
After compaction, flatten the sand layer and remove excess sand. Also remove contaminants or sharp objects.
LEGGEN
Each slab has excess geo-textile on 2 sides. Place the slab on the protruding geo-textile of the adjacent slab for maximum stability and strength and also weed reduction.
TAILOR-MADE
Cut the boards to size along the edges or around obstacles using the hand or electric saw. The boards should be trapped between the edge boards.
Note: observe manufacturer's safety instructions.
FILL
Fill the slabs with 1 or 2 sizes of chippings or gravel between 3-15 mm, such that the layer rises 15-20 mm above the slabs.
FINISH
Rake the split or gravel and distribute it evenly. Maintenance is limited to removing leaves, dirt and occasional raking. Top up where necessary so that the slabs are completely covered with gravel or grit.
