Different applications

Polycarbonate types
We can distinguish between 2 different types in polycarbonate, namely solid sheets and channel sheets. The solid sheets are obviously a lot heavier, but also much tougher. The channel sheets are incidentally also very impact-resistant and also have a much lower weight due to the spaces between the various layers. Nevertheless, they are particularly strong sheets. The weight distribution of polycarbonate hollow sheets is also very good. In terms of application, the solid sheets are often used as a glass replacement, windbreak or protective sheet. Polycarbonate properties
Polycarbonate as a plastic belongs to the polymers. This means that, in terms of properties, it is a particularly tough and hard plastic. Polycarbonate is also very impact-resistant. Polycarbonate is therefore much stronger and tougher than glass. Up to 250 times stronger. Polycarbonate is also virtually unbreakable. Where glass shatters completely, polycarbonate will remain in one piece.
In terms of colour, polycarbonate is as clear as Plexiglas and lets through over 90% of light. This is, for example, more than with a standard glass pane. With opal, there are several degrees of light transmission.
Furthermore, the sheets all have a UV filter. This means they are well protected from sunlight. The sheets are also less likely to discolour.
Furthermore, polycarbonate is lighter in weight than glass. The sheets weigh 1.2 kg per 1 mm thickness. So you can save a lot of weight if you choose polycarbonate instead of glass.
An advantage of polycarbonate over Plexiglas is also that it is fire-resistant. Thus, the material will not burn at high temperatures and polycarbonate is self-extinguishing.
