Description
Staff made of plastic
This plastic rod is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The material PVC is a hard, chemically highly resistant plastic with a recognisable dark-grey colour. The material allows excellent gluing, welding, setting, turning, milling and drilling. The mechanical strength of PVC-U also makes self-supporting constructions possible. A plastic rod does not allow gases and liquids to pass through and is highly resistant to ageing. Furthermore, PVC has excellent flame-retardant properties. The surface of a plastic bar is smooth and pore-free, making it easy to clean. The many processing options make this a PVC round bar suitable for various applications.
Plastic rods have the following properties:
- High rigidity and firmness
- High chemical resistance
- Low moisture absorption
- Available in various colours
- Good weather resistance
- Recyclable
- Range of application at continuous temperatures from -10° to + 60° C
- Low thermal linear expansion coefficient
- Hardly inflammable according to DIN 4102 B1 (1 to 4 mm)
- Self-extinguishing after flame removal
- Good electrical insulating properties
- Simple, fast and versatile processing options
Many applications
For example, PVC is a widely used material in the world of advertising, it is successfully used in the construction industry and, in the form of pipes, fittings and fixtures, PVC is indispensable in the construction of piping systems. For processors in equipment construction, mechanical engineering and the electrical industry, too, the application possibilities of PVC are numerous.
The applications of a plastic bar are as follows:
- Greenhouses and greenhouse structures
- Terrace covers
- Noise barriers
- Industrial roofing
Different types of operations
Plastic bar is widely used not only because of its endless application possibilities, but also because it can be processed in various ways. These include chipless machining, welding, gluing and all kinds of surface treatments. But it can also be deformed.
Machining operations
Machinery and tools for processing PVC are also used in the metal and woodworking industries. Decisive here is the choice of the right tools and the right cutting conditions. When machining, it is important to pay attention to high cutting speed, sharp cutting edges, low feed and good chip removal. This is the best way to avoid tearing and unnecessary splitting. The best cooling is heat dissipation through the chip, unlike in metal processing, the chip should be as long as possible, as thermoplastics are poor heat conductors.
Chipless machining
PVC-U and PVC-HI rods up to a maximum thickness of 2 mm can also be punched or cut on impact shears without further ado. In cooler weather, care should be taken to ensure that the material is stored at room temperature for long enough.
PVC welding
PVC semi-finished products can be welded by heat and pressure. As with other thermoplastics, PVC can be welded according to the processes described in DIN. This mainly involves hot-air welding and welding with heated tools. Welded joints should be made so that they are subjected to only low bending loads.
Adhesives
With the right types of adhesive, it is possible to join plastic rods quite easily and with high bond strength. While gluing, care should be taken to ensure that the right type of adhesive is used. When PVC materials are glued together, only solvent-based adhesives should be used. However, if PVC is glued to another material, an adhesive adhesive should be used.
Surface treatment
When the material is used in screen printing applications, the plates should be cleaned and degreased accordingly before the printing or varnishing process to ensure sufficient adhesion of the paint.
Distort
Plastic rods deform well thermally. The deformation properties depend on the PVC type.
