Description
Polycarbonate sheets 8mm: exceptionally strong
A polycarbonate sheet is also called a tunnel sheet, channel sheet or multi-walled sheet. This is a flat, transparent light sheet consisting of at least two layers of plastic. The partitions between these layers connect the plastic sheets at both the top and bottom. This gives the sheets their unique stability.
The material of 8mm polycarbonate sheets is resilient, allowing it to support considerable weight. Unlike glass that shatters and Plexiglas that cracks, a double-walled polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable. Did you know that this type of plastic is 250 times stronger than glass of the same thickness and also much lighter? Moreover, polycarbonate 8mm is UV-resistant. The sheets are also available in 4, 6 and 10mm.
Advantages of polycarbonate sheets
But there are other features, which read as follows:
- Burglary World
- Fire retardant
- Impact-resistant
- Has minimal thickness tolerance
What is the difference between polycarbonate and plexiglass?
Polycarbonate and plexiglass are sometimes confused with each other, which is not surprising. In fact, polycarbonate and plexiglass are both popular substitutes for glass. Polycarbonate is extremely strong, almost unbreakable and has built-in UV protection, making it highly resistant to impact and sunlight. Plexiglass is stronger than glass, but not as strong as polycarbonate. Unlike glass that shatters and plexiglass that cracks, a double-walled polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable. Did you know that this type of plastic is 250 times stronger than glass of the same thickness and also much lighter?
8mm polycarbonate offers clarity and light transmission and is more scratch-resistant than plexiglass. However, the material can deform at high temperatures, while polycarbonate is more heat-resistant. Both materials are lightweight, although polycarbonate is slightly lighter. The choice between a polycarbonate sheet and plexiglass depends on the specific needs of your project.
Including protective film on both sides
The 8mm double-walled polycarbonate sheets are supplied with a protective film on both sides. The foil on one side indicates which side has UV protection; the other side offers no UV protection. The 8mm channel sheet is always double-walled, single-walled variants are therefore not available.
From partition walls to conservatories
Double-walled polycarbonate is versatile, including for various security applications, as partitions, as a polycarbonate channel sheet is virtually unbreakable. They are also widely used in construction, for example as glass replacement, balcony glazing, canopies in gardens and for conservatories. They allow light to pass through, diffuse light beautifully and are easy to install. Therefore, thicker sheets are often used as roofing sheets in construction. However, 8mm sheets are not suitable for canopies.
Opal and clear
Two colour options are available, namely clear and opal. For regular glazing applications, we recommend choosing the colour opal. This is because this variant is crystal clear, whereas a polycarbonate sheet usually has a milky white appearance, but still allows light to pass through. Opal is frequently used for privacy glazing and light cubes, light boxes and illuminated advertising panels.
Edit options
An 8mm polycarbonate sheet offers numerous processing options. You can have the channel sheet milled, hot and cold bent, sawed, drilled, polished, faceted, matted and printed. You can also cut the sheets to size yourself with a fine saw. For the processing options offered for a channel plate, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to tell you more about the possibilities.
