How do I lay plastic decking boards?
In general, laying plastic decking boards is a simple process, depending on the fastening method you choose. First, make sure the terrain is flat and stable. To create a strong support structure, it is recommended to place wooden beams evenly to provide support for the decking boards. Then, using a starter profile, place the first board level to the edge of the deck and secure it with screws and fastening profiles.
Pay close attention to creating equal gaps between each board for a uniform look. Is the leveling of the decking boards finished? Then check that everything is really level and securely fastened with the screws. You can consider using finishing strips in the same colours as the plastic decking boards.
Calculation of the material
Before starting the project, it is important to know how many decking boards and what other supplies you are going to need for the number of m² of the project. This way, you can get started prepared and ensure less residual waste. Firstly, it is good to know that Thomdeck decking boards are supplied in lengths of 3 metres.
To install 1m² of decking boards, you will need the following:
- Terrace boards: To fill a 1m², you need 2.33 length (1000cm (surface area project) / 140cm (width plank) = 7.14 metres. 1 plank = 3 metres. 7 / 3 = 2.5 lengths. For large surfaces, take into account the possible space between the decking boards, do not close this, but keep 1cm free for drainage and venting.
- Fastening profile: To cover 1m² with decking boards, install an attachment profile every 40cm. For an area of 1m², you need 3 metres of profiles. Note: if the surface is 2 metres long, you will need 5 metres of profiles. So calculate carefully how many you need to install every 40 cm.
- Start profile: the start profile is mounted on the outside of the surface. For 1m², you need 1 metre of starter profile
- Mounting clips: The mounting clips are fixed between the decking boards to connect them securely. Also attach the clips every 40cm on the mounting profiles. A mounting clip is also attached to the starter profile. For the total area of 1m² you need 18 clips
- Screws: the screws are for fixing the starter profiles and mounting clips. You screw them into the mounting profile and use 21 screws for a surface area of 1m²
- Tools: to build your deck, you will need a drill, spirit level, square and a woodworking saw, such as a circular saw or handsaw
Step-by-step plan for installing a terrace or decking
- A decking requires a flat surface. Concrete or rubble lends itself well to this. First lay the floor joists as the base. Also make sure you lay the decking boards with a slope, so that water remains in the cavities of the decking boards.
- You attach the first decking board with a starter clip, which you screw onto all sub-joists, under the outer edge of the decking board. Then slide the board against the starter clip.
- You can continue fixing the decking boards and mounting clips, using a shop hook. Always ensure that the drill is in the correct low position so that the fastening material is not damaged
- Allow for a shrinkage gap of at least 6mm. Therefore, secure the end of the board with a mounting clip to a lower beam so that each decking board is adequately supported. Would you like a pattern in your decking? Then each board uses a different bottom board
- To finish off the laid boards, you can choose to use finishing strips to hide the visible sides. These finishing strips are screwed into the side of the decking board
