Our polycarbonate grey plastic sheets are cut to the millimetre in thicknesses of 4mm, 5mm and 6mm. The fine shade of polycarbonate grey is due to the unbreakable plastic glass fine colour pigments, which extends to the full thickness of the solid plastic sheets. Our PC grey is therefore not a tinted film, multilayer sheet or a cellular sheet with a thin layer of grey-coloured polycarbonate. To ensure that the plastic sheets do not scratch before and during processing, our polycarbonate sheets have an easily removable protective film on both sides that effectively protects the surfaces.

Description

Polycarbonate grey - impact-resistant UV-resistant

What is grey polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate grey is also often called polycarbonate tinted, its name is due to its grey pigmentation, which is created by adding organic colour pigments, which completely dissolve during extrusion, causing a distinct tint to the transparent polycarbonate plastic sheet. The tint affects light transmission, which also affects the transparency of the sheet. The transparency (transparent) is maintained, however, this is reduced as the thickness increases or decreases. The technical and thermal properties of polycarbonate, are not affected by the grey tint, so that PC grey is also considered an unbreakable plastic, which has excellent thermal properties. This is why covers and protective caps in mechanical engineering are mainly made of polycarbonate grey.

Light transmission of polycarbonate grey

The light transmission of tinted polycarbonate depends on its thickness. With increasing thickness of our polycarbonate grey plastic sheets, the light transmission also decreases. This is due to the addition of special, organic colour pigments in grey, giving the actual transparent polycarbonate that grey hue, which is also reminiscent of smoked glass.

  • Approx. 55% translucent at 4 mm thickness
  • Approx. 48% translucent at 5mm thickness
  • Approx. 40% translucent at 6 mm thickness

Our polycarbonate grey is weatherproof

As grey polycarbonate with its fine hue is often used for even patio canopies or shatterproof glazing, our polycarbonate sheets grey are Uv-resistant and weatherproof, so they can easily be used indoors and outdoors. Due to its excellent resistance to breakage, polycarbonate can withstand even the most severe impacts and blows. Even with large, heavy hailstorms, this plastic does not break. This tint also means that soiling of the roof covering is not as noticeable to the eye, as would be the case with clear transparent roof coverings. Polycarbonate is only half as heavy as usual glass, which also has an effect on the substructure to be built, as it does not need to be as stable as in the case of a real glass roof.

Larger formats of our Polycarbonate sheets in grey are available on request.

As standard, our polycarbonate grey sheets are offered customised up to a maximum size of 2000mm x 1000mm. On request, however, it is also possible to supply our tinted PC sheets up to a size of 3050mm x 2050mm, as this corresponds to the size in which we use standard polycarbonate grey in our warehouse. However, for larger sizes, shipping costs must be calculated separately in relation to the area and total weight of the order, so we can only deliver larger sizes upon request.

Application examples for polycarbonate grey

  • Polycarbonate grey is often used for blackout, shatterproof glazing with a light privacy screen
  • Polycarbonate grey is weatherproof and resistant to hail, making it ideal for patio covers
  • Polycarbonate grey provides discreet blackout and is ideal as glazing in bright lights
  • Polycarbonate grey is used in mechanical engineering for shatterproof covers and hoods in visible parts
  • And many more

Processing of polycarbonate grey

Our polycarbonate grey plastic sheets can be machined using all known machining methods. Cutting PC-tinted sheets, for example, can be carried out using a conventional jigsaw or circular saw. Even contour milling, chamfering and countersinking do not pose any particular challenge for tinted polycarbonate. For drilling holes, a usual cordless drill with a simple metal drill will also suffice. However, it should be noted that polycarbonate has scratch-sensitive surfaces, so it is advisable to be careful and remove the protective film after processing.

Polycarbonate grey is a thermoplastic and thus perfect for the industrial production of thermoformed parts. With a processing temperature of around 150°C, thermoforming of simple parts would be possible, even in a domestic oven. The operating temperature range at which polycarbonate grey can be used is between -40°C and +120°C.

NOTE: Our tinted polycarbonate sheets are coated on both sides with a protective film to protect the surface from scratches. We recommend removing the protective film only after processing, as polycarbonate is more sensitive to scratches than Acrylic glass.
