HMPE 500 plastic

HMPE stands for High Molecular Poly Ethylene. The molecular density largely determines the properties of the plastic polyethylene. HMPE has a molecular weight of about 500,000 g/mol. Compared to standard PE (HD-quality), the HMPE 500 version therefore has better wear and impact resistance. UHMPE (ultra) has a molecular density indicated by 1,000 or higher and is an abrasion-resistant plastic.

HMPE plastic is also moisture-repellent and can come into direct contact with foodstuffs according to current 10/2011 legislation. It also does not adhere to foodstuffs and has a low coefficient of friction. This highly processable plastic material group is widely used in the transport and transhipment sector, as chain linking, the dairy and canning industry and, finally, machine construction for the food industry.

The main technical properties of HMPE

An important technical characteristic of this material is its high wear resistance, which, combined with its friction resistance, makes it suitable for applications where guidance is key. HMPE plastic is used for conveyor belts, mechanical engineering and the meat processing industry, among others. Indeed, the HMPE FoodGrade variant is suitable for direct contact with foodstuffs.

To summarise again, this plastic has good wear and impact resistance, is suitable for foodstuffs, has low adhesion to other materials, is easy to process mechanically and, finally, has no to very low moisture absorption. The moisture-repellent property is particularly important for applications in environments where moisture plays a role.

What are the differences between HMPE 500 and HMPE 1000?

• Molecular weight: HMPE 500 sheet has a molecular weight of 500,000g/mol, while UHMPE 1000 sheet has a molecular weight of 4,000,000g/mol
• Wear resistance: UHMPE 1000 has approximately 4-5 times better wear resistance than HMPE 500
• Strength: UHMPE 1000 is 11 to 17 times stronger than HMPE at impact
• Price: the price of UHMPE is double compared to HMPE

The processing possibilities of HMPE 500 sheets

The plastic HMPE has several processing options. For instance, you can weld HMPE 500 sheets, machining, waterjet cutting, laser beam cutting, hot bending, cold setting and thermal forming. This means that depending on the desired application, the choice of a specific processing method may vary. For precise shapes, waterjet or laser beam cutting may be ideal, while for larger constructions, welding or thermoforming are better suited.
