What are drainage pipes for?

Drainage pipes play a crucial role in managing excess water. They are essential for preventing flooding and ensuring the stability of various sites, including sports and recreational areas, as well as agricultural land and urban areas. They are used in agriculture to protect crops from root rot, on sports fields to keep playing surfaces dry and usable, and constructed along houses, roads and embankments to prevent erosion and subsidence.

By discharging excess water, drainage pipes not only improve the usability of the site, but also contribute to longer life of the subsoil and infrastructure works. The pipes are installed underground where they collect excess water from the soil and drain it to a designated point. This prevents soil subsidence, flooding and damage to structures, among other things.

Different types of drainage tubes

Because there are different applications in which drainage tubes come in handy, all tubes also have their own specific properties:

• Blind drainage pipe: a blind drainage tube is cut-off and designed to collect and drain water from the ground efficiently. This tube is fully enclosed and is commonly used within greenhouse construction
• Drainage pipe wrapped with coir: the drainage tube wrapped with coconut is ideal for constructing a drainage system in peaty or sandy soil, for example applicable in the garden, horse trough or around the garden
• Drainage pipe wrapped with polypropylene fibre: this drainage pipe is most widely used thanks to its wide applicability. It is a sustainable choice as it is encased in recycled polypropylene

Drainage pipe fittings

Besides the fact that the drainage tubes are available in different sizes, such as 125 mm and 80 mm, it is also possible to order the tubes with corresponding fittings. These are an end cap, click socket, 90° T-piece or even an end pipe with click socket. An end cap is used to seal off the end of the pipe. This prevents unwanted dirt particles or animals from entering the drainage system. With a click socket you connect two pieces of pipe without using extra tools and with a T-piece you create a branch in the system to direct water from different directions to a point.

Finally, an end pipe with snap socket allows you to easily create a drainage point at the desired point in the system. Thus, there is a solid and leak-proof connection and you can be sure that the drainage system will work optimally. Drainage pipe fittings are not only essential for proper operation, but also offer a lot of flexibility in design and subsequent installation. Customise it to the specific requirements of the site you are working with and ensure efficient drainage of excess water.
