Acrylic processing
Acrylic, also known as PMMA, perspex or plexiglass, is a very widely used material. Applications show themselves in the advertising industry, in the form of displays or showcases, for example, but also in other places where (break) safety is important. The material has so many different applications due to its favourable properties:
- It is lightweight.
- High fracture safety
- Weatherproof
- Highly durable
- Crystal clear
- Good to work with
- Highly (permanently) thermally deformable
Acrylic is also reasonably cheap. This allows acrylic to be used in very many places, especially if you are not allowed to use glass because of shards or breaking.
There are two forms of acrylic, cast and extruded, each with different properties. Cast acrylic has less residual stresses than extruded acrylic. This makes the application of certain operations better on cast acrylic. Kunststof Forte BV will therefore be happy to advise you on which semi-finished acrylic, or which forms of processing, are best suited to your product.
In general, most known machining processes can be applied to acrylic without any problems. Well-known machining processes include drilling, milling and sawing.
